Grantmaking

  • Network grants totalled about £56 million in 2008-09.
  • Grants benefit at least 19,500 voluntary and community groups.
  • Very few people are more than 20 miles from a project funded by a community foundation.
  • Grants can range from £50 to over £250,000.
  • Community foundations combined are one of the UK's biggest funders of the voluntary and community sector.
Endowment and funds

  • Endowment was over £151 million at March 2009 - up 28% when adjusted for market movements
  • 1765 major donors (up 28%) with new funds up 60% on previous year
  • Average value of new fund is £78,000
  • Ten foundations have received £1 million-plus donations in the last five years
  • 40% of grants made from private sector. In the last five years, community foundations generated £200 million of new private giving for communities, and helped government and other agencies invest £300 million.
  • Fair Share Trust spend has reached £30 million (from the orginal £50 million fund).
Network

  • 58 community foundations in UK, covering 98% of the population.
  • 45 are Quality Accredited by CFN to standards endorsed by the Charity Commission.
  • With the equivalent of 344 fulltime staff employed and 2,750 volunteers (including 1,642 panel members and 736 trustees) over 3,000 people are involved in supporting donors and community foundations.
